How warm woods, cool metals, and soft lighting shape this unique space

AKILA’s new Sunset Boulevard flagship, designed by Los Angeles-based 22RE, is a stunning boutique.
The store tastefully incorporates contrasting materials – warm woods, cool metals, muted concrete, and well-lit glass. And it does so while expressing AKILA founder Chris Mart’s vision of embracing sustainability without compromising style. The project’s custom millwork, by C.Y. Design and Fabrication Studio, brings the vision to life.
Consider the design elements and details found in the photo above:
- Three distinct shelving styles, which are mirrored on both sides of the store, create a balance while offering distinct visual zones.
- The backlit curved wall and custom metal counter create a gallery-like experience.
- Natural wood tones and linear design elements are softened by gentle curves, creating an inviting, warm space.

- Custom metal shelving, backing, and kick plates pop against the warm wood tones.
- Recessed lighting frames the shelving and boosts product visibility.

- Recessed glass shelving, lit from all angles, illuminates each frame while avoiding shadows.
- Douglas fir panels, native to the Pacific Coast, integrate and hide storage. The choice of using native wood adds a regional character.

- Full-length mirrors, framed in Douglas fir and enhanced by recessed lighting, offer a soft-lit fitting experience.
- The mirrors also serve a second purpose, to visually expand the space.
- Douglas fir shelving with under-shelf lighting provides warm product lighting.
- The metal panels provide a visual break while also integrating storage.

- A recessed display cubby provides a dedicated space to feature products, promotions, or even some greenery.
- Post-and-beam features help define different retail zones.

- Uncovered studio monitor built-ins are made possible because of the intricate joinery work.

- Douglas fir centre counters incorporate glass blocks, introducing a retro design element that plays well with the post-and-beam features.
- Backlit overhead panels cast a warm, diffused light throughout the space.

- At the back of the store, the feature wall combines concrete pillars with precision millwork.
- Concrete floors add a subtle sheen while giving a nod to the space’s original use – a former auto body shop from the 1930s.

There’s no doubt that AKILA’s Sunset Boulevard store makes a statement. And that’s because the space looks so, intentional.
It’s what happens when thoughtful retail design is paired with exceptional craftsmanship.
A special shoutout to Elizabeth Carababas who is credited for all of the Photography.
