Building retail through sustainable practices.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
We care. Not in some corporate slogan or ethereal way. As an entrepreneur lead, mission-driven company, we care about the people we work with. Our partners. Our customers. And our customers’ customers.
As one of Canada’s largest retail environment design-builders, we have the chance to come into work each and every day knowing our facilities and processes are grounded in sustainable practices, waste diversion, and energy conservation, while we also support the communities we work in. It’s both rewarding and good for business.

01/07OUR RAW MATERIALS
Wherever possible and available, we source raw materials composed of recycled content. Examples include our hardboard backs that are SFI certified and are made from 100% recycled wood fibre content or our sourced steel, which, depending on the vendor, type of steel, and specific component, consists of anywhere from 27% – 72% recycled content.
-
02/07THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Our manufacturing process not only produces the highest quality products, but we are also keenly focused on finding efficiencies while using every square inch of raw material.
In one year alone, we’ll purchase over 200 metric tons of sheet steel and we’re able to reduce wasted material down to 9%, of which all scrap is diverted to our recycling efforts.
We also guarantee all of our steel finishing use powder-coating technology to eliminate emissions and hazardous wastewater, typically created with standard epoxy painting practices.
For our wood products, we use low VOC water-based paints and no VOC fillers, reducing scrap for hardboard backs.
-
03/07DISTRIBUTION
Inefficient transportation and distribution methods are a major source of waste - to combat this we ship our product in bulk, consolidating orders as much as possible, we proactively determine the most efficient route from our facilities to your locations - anywhere in North America, and we only use recyclable corner boards and steel strapping.
These practices ensure your custom fixtures are not damaged during shipment and more product is delivered in each trailer load.
-
04/07RECYCLING
Whether it’s in production, distribution, or our offices, recycling is a way of life at CBSF:
- We reuse the pallets and packaging that comes from our suppliers
- Wood cut-offs from our millwork are reclaimed as packing material to protect new fixtures
- Our steel cut-offs are sold as scrap to be melted down and reincorporated into new steel
- In our offices, everything from the usual paper and plastic gets recycled along with corrugated cardboard, light bulbs, and outdated computers.
- And, each of our offices employs an environmental coordinator to ensure compliance, reporting, and employee training is always up to date.
-
05/07BUSINESS OPERATIONS
At CBSF, we conduct environmental and health and safety reviews on all chemicals used in every facility – manufacturing, distribution, and offices.
Over the past 3 years, we have substituted less hazardous materials within our production processes as well as our building maintenance, tool and die, and lawn care.
Several of our facilities have also replaced outdated light fixtures with more energy efficient models, increasing light output while reducing energy consumption by an average of 40%.
-
06/07WHERE WE WORK
In a series of recent remodels, we designed all of our office locations with an open floor plan, proven to be great for culture and communication. With the choice of colours and finishes, and the use of lights that reflect light off the ceiling, the design gives employees access to natural and indirect light making it a more comfortable environment to work in.
We even took it outside – investing in over 300 solar panels covering a total of just over 21,500 sf.
On average we generate on 250kWh annually to help offset our electricity consumption. And since installation, we have generated one and a half times more energy than we consume for that one location.

07/07IN OUR COMMUNITY
Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter
What started out over a decade ago as a simple team, holiday food drive has become a commitment to not only support Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter with ongoing company and team events, but a personal mission for Luisa Loffreda (Vice President Operations, CBSF) to spread the word and source new contributors for the shelter.
Luisa has shared the Ernestine’s story with neighbouring businesses and colleagues who have, in turn, extended financial and in-kind support.
A chance encounter between Luisa and the team at Ernestine’s has led to long-term support, growing from that first food drive to clothing swaps, hosting seasonal activity craft days for the children, and financial support for programs like ‘Skills Exchange.’
